Oh My Gods…It’s Thassa!

“So you wanna worship Thassa huh?”

Do you like change? You like new ideas and disrupting the status quo? You like water?

Then Thassa is the goddess for you!

To understand your role as a fledgling worshipper of Thassa, you need to understand who we are talking about.

Thassa is the Goddess of the sea, anything that swims, and anything that exists in the darkest reaches of the ocean. If you have Thalassophobia, then you might want to look for another god to worship. She’s overall pretty chill and stubborn in her ways, and she rarely laughs unless she’s making fun of you. However, if you piss her off then you are pretty much fucked. One time, some asshole named Rasiao tried to steal one of Thassa’s pearls and fled to the driest regions of the world to escape her wrath. Unfortunately, after many years of away from the sea, she made a small trip to Akros where she then drowned in a bowl of Ox Stew. Thassa does not forgive nor forget.

When she wants to make one of her rare appearances, she often looks like a giant female triton-like being with octopus like hair and a crown of crab legs. She often wields a bident called Dekella, which she enjoys poking mortals with. She hates being the same size as humanoids, preferring to be “above” them, but when she does get down to your level, she could look like anything; a storm, a wave, a school of fishes, or maybe a giant turtle.

Sure Thassa is known for ruling the sea but she is also known for other not so tangible things like ancient knowledge, long-term change, looking at yourself in the mirror, sailing, and repetitive patterns like plaid in the fall.

She is ever patient and just like the ocean, it is relentless and knows that everything changes if given enough time.

“So what does she want anyway?”

Change. Not for anything specific, just because things NEED to change. She believes that eventually everything changes and it’s the reality of the world that is essential to existence; even if that means to disrupt anyone or anything that tries to maintain a permanent order to the universe. If you are looking for divine help to fuck up the status quo, then Thassa is your goddess.

“Does she play well with other gods?”

No. She thinks the other gods are being stupid and shortsighted that they believe they can impose any sort of lasting order upon the universe. Although she frequently disagrees with her fellow gods and siblings like Heliod, she doesn’t hate them. She just thinks they’re stupid.

Everything built will eventually crumble into sand.

“So where do I sign up?”

Depends on who you are. Most worshippers are tritons, which makes sense. They live their lives in the sea, with their god always around. Those on dry land however, often are those who rely on the sea for their livelihoods like sailors and fisherman, praying for calm seas and bountiful fish in their nets. If any of this applies to you, then most likely you’ve been to Meletis.

Meletis is where Her Greatest temple is located, where they hold a week long festival called “the feast of the Melting Swell”, which marks the start of the new year by celebrating the bounty of the sea. It’s where you wanna be if you wanna stay in her good graces. Also it’s just a rad, fun, family friendly vacation.

“So what will you be doing as a champion of Thassa?”

Offcially, you’ll be expected to:

1. Support those who would reform or overturn institutions

2. Prevent cataclysmic change

3. Offer treasures to the sea

4. Defend or maintain a temple to Thassa

What NOT to do:

1. Keep a secret from Thassa

2. Using magic to calm the seas fury

3. Upholding an institution that’s not Thassa

4. Bowing to the desires or demands of another god

She’s kind of a “my way or the highway” kind of gal.

You’ll most likely be working indirectly for her doing damage control for some of her destructible outbursts, or perhaps to help avenge her in some terrible slight, for she may not contact you for years, if ever.

A few goals that you may have to achieve is perhaps help a local village from destruction as collateral damage from her main target, retrieve a great sunken treasure before thieves get it, or just straight up assassinate someone who pissed her off.

If all of this sounds like a grand time, come on over and enjoy the sushi.
