(Picture is slightly related. I could not find a single picture online that had shown a Screamer. It’s Warhammer but I’d like to envision that the creature looks just has horrifying as that thing.)
Remember when I said that Duergars are unhappy party poopers? Well I may have understated that a bit. Duergars are a tyrannical race of Dwarves that want to enslave and expand their empower as well as, oh I don’t know, cast down the entire pantheon of Dwarven Gods as revenge for not helping them out when they all got enslaved by Mind Flayers for several generations. Because of all this unhappy tyrannical fuckery, the Duergar decided, “Hey, let’s do some fucked up shit.” Meet the Duergar Screamer.
According to Mordenkainen’s Tomb of Foes, (Pg. 190), “A Duergar Screamer is a construct that uses sonic energy to grind rock into dust. Duergar accused of spreading gossip or plotting against their superiors are trapped within one of these devices, their beards shorn and their ongoing agony channeled into psionic energy that powers the screamer.”
Basically, talk shit, get thrown into eternal hell in a construct that uses your suffering as psionic energy to SONICALLY BREAK ROCKS. That’s it. That’s their existence from that point on.
Stats are made of numbers, and that’s just what they’ll do
AC: 15, HP 38 (7d8 + 7), Speed 20ft.
STR 18 (+4): Machine strong.
DEX 7 (-2): Machine slow.
CON 12 (+1): Machine tough.
INT 5 (-3): Machine dumb.
WIS 5 (-3): Machine machine.
CHA 5 (-3): Machine cannot sing.
Damage Immunity: Poison
Condition Immunity: Charmed, Exhausted, Frightened, Paralyzed, Petrified, Poisoned
Senses: Darkvision 60ft. Passive perception of 7
Languages: Knows Dwarvish but cannot speak
There’s a bit to unpack here. This thing is basically powered off the suffering of free thinking Duergars, and as such is nearly entirely machine at this point. I guess a question would be is are they still alive in there? I mean, they can understand Dwarvish but they cannot speak, so that has to be some sort of cognitive ability left in that husk. Also, I’m assuming the machine runs off the energy of a LIVING host. Of course it doesn’t say it outright, but damn is that fucked up.
What makes them cooler than you
Engine of Pain: “Once per turn, a creature that attacks the screamer can target the duergar trapped in it. The attacker has disadvantage on the attack roll. On a hit, the attack deals an extra 11 (2d10) damage to the screamer, and the screamer can respond by using its Multiattack with its reaction.” AS A REACTION, IT CAN DEAL 10 (1d12 + 4) + 7 (2d6) thunder damage and be knocked prone if they fail a strength throw!
Multiattack: One Drill and one Sonic Scream attack
Drill: Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (1d12 + 4) piercing damage.
Sonic Scream. The screamer emits destructive energy in a 15-foot cube. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 11 Strength saving throw or take 7 (2d6) thunder damage and be knocked prone.
This is horrifying. Try not to fight enslaved robot miners or become dust like the rocks before it.
